In the summer months, off the coast of Portland, Blue whales come to feed on the millions of Krill that are brought to the surface of the ocean by nutrients supplied by the "Bonnie Upwelling".

These magnificent animals are the largest creatures to inhabit our world. They are an amazing sight and can be seen "blowing" and diving off the coast, best viewed from the top of the lighthouse.

In winter both Southern Right and Humpback whales are seen off the coast sometimes very close to the cliffs of the precinct; so close you can hear them sing!
