Great South West Walk
Don't miss this unique part of Australia, the Great South West Walk takes walkers along 250km of spectacular coast line and through State Forest as well. The walk travels directly through the lighthouse precinct. Walkers may travel some of the shorter walks that loop through the precinct or travel much longer ones. A unique way to both stay at the lighthouse and walk some challenging (or easier walks) is to travel with Aus Walks.
The Great South West Walk has been developed as a bushwalking trail suitable for most ages and abilities comprising short 2 hour loop walks, full day walks, or for the intrepid, the whole 250km loop that begins and ends at the Maritime Discovery and Visitor Information Centre in Portland Victoria, Australia. This unforgettable experience winds around 3 National Parks, hardwood forests, the pristine Glenelg River, the picturesque township of Nelson, aboriginal heritage sites, the mighty Southern Ocean and vast sand dunes, sandy bays and beaches, rugged cliffs, freshwater lakes, the Cape Nelson Lighthouse, the stunning Bridgewater Bay and amongst a diversity of natural fauna and flora including Blue and Southern Right Whales, a mainland Fur Seal colony and Australia’s only mainland Australasian Gannet rookery and much more.
Whale Watching & WILDLIFE
In summer, Blue whales feed off the coast of Portland, their majestic presence best viewed from the lighthouse. In winter, Southern Right and Humpback whales can often be seen close to the cliffs, providing a spectacular sight and even the chance to hear them sing.
Portland is also home to Australia’s only mainland Gannet colony from September to March, offering a rare opportunity to observe both Australasian and Cape Gannets in their natural habitat.
For an exhilarating adventure, the Seal Tours take you on a 45-minute boat ride to a lively seal colony, where you can watch Australian and New Zealand fur seals play, slide on rocks, and even spot dolphins and whales if you’re lucky. You can also see the seals from the lighthouse using binoculars, providing a unique vantage point for observing their playful antics.
Don’t miss the chance to spot adorable echidnas in the area, often seen along the trails and coastal areas. These unique creatures, with their spiky coats and charming waddle, are a delight.
